The Importance of Building Your Business on Your Passion
Author: Will Corrente
Successful businesses are based on the passion of the entrepreneur, and Connection Ready entrepreneurs know how to communicate that passion to everyone they meet. In a nutshell, passion is the ultimate expression of your honest excitement for something you enjoy. Successful entrepreneurs have learned to leverage their passion and create a business to serve their customers.
Passionate entrepreneurs have a look of honest excitement and happiness in their eyes, in their body language and in their tone when they interact with their clients, customers, investors, and others. Whether it is the way they talk about their product or discuss their industry, passionate entrepreneurs have an infectious excitement and deep caring that makes others want to connect and do business with them. Passion is something that you cannot fake or overlook if you truly want to connect with your customers, vendors, partners or investors.
Entrepreneurs who are in line with their passion light up at the mere mention of their subject. In one of my businesses, my business partner is Marc Street, owner of the Happy Dog Training Company. Marc is truly passionate about dogs and dog training. He lights up the moment you mention dogs and even more so when he starts talking about them. After 15 years of training and working with animals he still enthusiastically speaks to clients, prospects, and strangers about dogs, dog behavior, dog health, and dog rescue. He spends his spare time reading and researching animal behavior topics and is always thinking of ways to improve the quality of life for dogs through his philanthropic work with various dog charities and rescues.
Clients, customers, employees, and suppliers can tell very quickly when you are not enjoying or are not “passionate” about your business. The genuine smile that exudes joy and satisfaction just isn’t there when you are “pretending” to be passionate. If you are an idea phase entrepreneur still struggling to find your passion, there are online assessment tests some of which are free and some of which are paid to help you discover your passions. The Psychology Today website has a great entrepreneur assessment test, along with many other tests covering career, IQ, personality and relationships. Although Career Planner is a more general career planning assessment tool, it is a great resource for working towards your passions because it helps you pinpoint some of your other areas of interest and skills and abilities, along with insights into how enterprising you are and helping to measure your entrepreneurial ability.
Once you are in touch with your passion you are ready to connect it with a business model that can generate revenues and profits. In Marc’s case, he took his passion for dogs and applied training and behavior services to create a profitable training business. Marrying your passion with a sound business model is the key to building a profitable and successful business.
